RURAL women in Gwanda South district have stood up against gender-based violence emphasising on the need for recognition of vital roles played by women in society.
The move comes as the nation joins the world in commemorating the 16 days of activitism against gender based violence which runs every month of November and started yesterday ending on 10 December. This year’s theme is “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World, Make Education safe for All.”
In a visit by the news crew to Gwanda South rural areas Garanyemba, Mawane and Ntepe, rural women expressed the fruitfulness of the nation’s upholding mission to protect women values and rights.
“When we see the nation in motion to the activitism against gender based violence, as women it gives us a mandate to make a change and be able to assist some of our fellow villagers who we know are victims of gender based violence but cannot act because of the fear inflicted on them,” said Mrs Nompumelelo Nare.
Ms Rapelang Noko said: “As young women we are challenging the evils acts done by other men of beating up women and this month is to support all those affected and we stand by their side giving them hope for the present and the future. We want a future where women are respected of their rights and where a man never views women as some sort of punching bags.”
In the past there has been high number of cases of drop outs in schools by the girl child and also of gender based violence acts being swept under the carpet.
“We know some of the men who are in the tendency of beating up their wives because they want to go out there and look for jobs and be independent women. Some are beaten up because of stressing a point that their girl children should pursue further in their education. Gone are those days of blocking a way of success for women thus the law should take its course to these kind of creatures,” she added. — @mthabisi_mthire
