The tournament, which was held at Goromonzi High, featured 10 schools from Goromonzi district — T.C Hardy, St Vincent, Goromonzi, Rusike, Chinyika, Macheke, Zimburi, St Dominics Nora, St Dominics High and Chinamora.
The schools were divided into four groups and the top team progressed to the semi-finals. Rusike, who emerged winners in Group D, beat Goromonzi 2-0 in the semi-finals while Macheke, who were making their debut appearance in the competition, dismissed Chinamora 2-0 in the other semi-final match. Rusike proved to be the best team of the day when they defeated Macheke in the finals to claim the title.
For their efforts they got a trophy, football kit and mealie-meal while Macheke walked away with a shield and football kit as well.
In the third and fourth play-off, Goromonzi beat Chinamora 1-0 to finish on third place and they got a shield. One of the organisers, John Manyamba, was impressed with the competitive edge of the event and said they were pleased with the improvement they were seeing in the players.
“This year the competition was tough than last year. Mucheke were participating for the first time and they were very competitive.
“The event is developing, we have noticed that most of the girls selected for the Mashonaland East province are coming from Goromonzi district.
“We want to motivate the girl child to take soccer seriously,” said Manyamba.
Chinamora were voted the most disciplined team while for the individual prizes, Nyasha Matuku of Macheke was voted best goalkeeper of the tournament. Chipo Masengera of Chinamora got the best defender award while Maybe Tachiona of Macheke walked away with two awards — the best midfielder and the top goal scorer. The most disciplined player award went to Nyasha Tazvitya of Rusike while St Dominics’ Rutendo
Chirikure was voted player of the tournament. The organisers also selected the best 18 players who will take on Marondera select on October 22 in an effort to promote girls’ participation in soccer.
