Russia has encouraged Zimbabweans wanting to access free scholarships to visit its website so that they select an area of study that suits their interests and then familiarise with selection requirements.
In a statement yesterday, the Russian government said it allocates free scholarships for foreigners to study in that country since education “is key to unlocking human potential and plays an important role for the empowerment of individual and communities”.
It offers Bachelor’s, specialist’s and Master’s degrees in various areas from culture and arts to nuclear physics and computer technology.
Russian has over 1 000 higher educational institutions with more than 140 000 foreign students from over 160 countries, 17 from Africa.
“In Zimbabwe, the Russian Federation collaborates with the Presidential and National Scholarships Department in the Office of the President and Cabinet to make the process of admission of foreign citizens to universities more transparent, understandable and fast,” reads the statement.
“This, it does by providing a special website https://education-in-russia.com where everyone can choose an area and a level of study and familiarise with requirements for candidates and fill out the application form.
“For Zimbabwean applicants, the completion of the application form on the website is done after the applicants have responded to an advert placed in various media by the Presidential and National Scholarships Department.”
The online registration runs up until end of October 2021.
Applicants that would have responded to the advertisement placed by the Presidential and National Scholarships Department would then be short-listed and informed to complete the application form on the website and upload their passport, a document attesting one’s previous education, a medical certificate, negative certificate for HIV/Aids, all types of hepatitis and tuberculosis.
On demand, one can provide a list of scientific publications or research synopsis.
The statement added that at the next level, candidates’ profiles will be sent to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, and results of the admission campaign will be announced in August 2022.
“A special attention is being paid to studying the Russian language since education is provided in Russian. Hence, an additional academic year is offered free of charge to study the language.
“The Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Zimbabwe has made it possible for those who are eager to be well prepared and has opened the Russian language courses for beginners and intermediate level,” said Russia in the statement. To enrol for the courses, one can write to the Embassy’s email address.
Presently, the Presidential and National Scholarships Department along with the Russian Embassy, invites applications for the Russian Federation Scholarships for the 2022/23 academic year. The scholarships target able, talented and academically gifted students from the country’s 10 provinces intending to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Russian universities.
Preferences would be given to applicants who satisfy the following criteria: undergraduates applicants for none Science disciplines should have a minimum of 10 points at A Level in subjects that are relevant to the chosen degree programme and must be under 25 years of age or below by December 31 next year; undergraduate applicants for science and technology disciplines should have A or B in relevant A Level science subjects, Masters and PhD applicants should have either First Class or Upper Second Class degree classification in the relevant field of study.
Masters applicants should be below 35 years, while PhD applicants should be below 45 years by December 31, 2022.
Selected candidates will be required to undergo a thorough medical check-up from reputable medical practitioners, including HIV/AIDS testing.
Through fruitful cooperation of the Russian Embassy with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Presidential and National Scholarships Office of Zimbabwe, more than 60 boys and girls are chosen annually to study in Russia.
