Russia-Ukraine crisis: A game of the maverick

Isdore Guvamombe Saturday Lounge Reflections

Naturally, my heart bleeds for the ordinary people of Ukraine, for, they have had the misfortune of having a young, inexperienced and dippy political leader who failed to ensure that a war is not fought on their home soil. Terrible!”

Back in the village in the proverbial land of milk, honey and dust or Guruve elders with cotton tuft hair say, a man who takes home a maggot infested log, must not be surprised when lizards visit him.

Here again, the elders say war is never a stroll in park. War is blood and death. War should be avoided at all costs but at times war becomes inevitable.

Ode, ode to Russia. Russia has become the talk of the world. President Vladimir Putin is now known by everyone, including kids still milking behind their ears. Talk about Putin in the negative or positive, he is just there, making history.

Dear reader, here in the village we so love Russia from the days of our liberation struggle and we so hate our colonisers and their allies, so much that we will not apologise. Like Russians, we have been under illegal USA sanctions too.

History, is a great teacher. Russia was not at the partitioning of Africa at Berlin Conference in 1884. Russia never colonised us. Russia never imposed sanctions on us and indeed Russia used its Veto power in 2008 when the United States of America and is allies, sought to attack us.

Russia helped us execute our war of liberation and has stood in its lane forever and ever. It still stands by us.

Back to the crisis in Ukraine.

Supported and urged by the maverick USA and its allies, Zelenskyy did not understand he was being made to punch above his weight. They made him believe, he could pull the weight but he forgot he had citizens and infrastructure to protect.

In every war, the first thing to die is the truth.  Since the beginning of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, we have seen western media peddle lies in a tempo and crescendo never seen before.

This is a new normal. An affront to the democracy and good media practice that they have preached to us over the years. It is now all lies, lies, lies and lies. Blatant lies!

They want to paint Putin as an insane dictator and a mindless war monger without facing the reality that they provoked Russia by trying to get to his doorstep, through Ukraine.

We in the village are not too stupid not to know that the current special military operation in Ukraine came after more than eight years of Zelenskyy bombarding two regions dear to Russia.  No one in the West dares tell us about the death of thousands of people of Russian extract. Did they not have blood? Are they not people?  Is that not genocide?

The truth is that the US and its allies triggered this war. This is the sad truth they don’t want to us to hear. What hypocrisy? When you slap a lion in the face what do you expect? A smile from the ferline?

Since the special operation started in Ukraine we have seen western European countries and USA politicians wince, snivel and cringe like rats on steroids. They have tried to kill the truth.  But the truth is on the ground in Ukraine, where the war is raging.

Karitundundu, the ageless village autochthone, insists that the young leader of Ukraine lacked wisdom and knowledge resulting in him being fooled by the maverick western countries into allowing a war on his home soil.

Those who fooled him, do not want a single bomb dropped on their home soil because they know the amount of destruction a war brings. Nothing beats experience. Even if they pumped up and pampered the young man with weapons and ammunition to defend himself, we all know the silly part of it is that the war would still be fought Ukrainian soil. Destruction would always be on his infrastructure and people. Fetid!

With a bit of carefulness and maturity Zelenskyy would have avoided the war. He would have understood the politics of his region.

Everything is up in smoke. There is no more country to talk about. It is all rubble and ramshackle. Mangled things. Open pits. Shells.

What is left is Zelenskyy’s ego.  But he is not going too far. His country is going to be a hodgepodge of open pits and a war monument.

There are too many lessons from this military operation, especially for our young generation of politicians who think war is fun and easy. Being young like Zelenskyy at the age of 44 is not good enough to be entrusted with a country, wisdom is important. Critically important. Knowledge of geopolitics and not comedy is important. What with bringing tragicomedy to the country. Let comedians be comedians and let politicians be politicians. No buffet!

Zelenskyy has mortgaged his country to war and death because of his lack of experience and land of understanding of geopolitics. He mistook Russian diplomacy for insanity.

Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine came after many warnings by President Putin and Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy failing to take heed of the warning.

Now without going into the intricacies of the conflict from the days of the Minsk Agreement to the first bomb dropping this year, one thing for sure is that the Ukrainian leader was supposed to know what that the war was going to take place on his soil. The Russian build up was very clear. The signs were clear for all to see.

Naturally, my heart bleeds for the ordinary people of Ukraine, for, they have had the misfortune of having a young, inexperienced and dippy political leader who failed to ensure that a war is not fought on their home soil. Terrible

Up to now it is inexplicable how young Zelenskyy could not see the plain truth that it was his country’s infrastructure and his people who would die. The war was never going to be on the soil of his friends in USA and NATO.

In my village, wisdom entails that one should make sure no war is fought in his compound. It common wisdom. Once war is fought in your compound no matter how brave you are, the destruction is on your property. Een if you win, it is bad enough.

THis villager knows that since the beginning of the year, US, Great Britain, Canada, Poland and Lithuania sent more than 50 military aircraft to Ukraine with tones of weapons and ammunition.

It became very clear that Ukraine was fast developing into a military base for future use against Russia. Russia therefore became sure that it now had a bad neighbour. A very dangerous one.

Back in my village, a bad neighbour makes you lose sleep. Living next to a bad neighbour, especially a neighbour who befriends your worst enemy is terrible. It is hell.

It is fact not fiction that after Ukraine breaching the Minsky Agreement, Russia felt betrayed by its neighbour.

The sad part is that they are not at war. And indeed, typical to any war, there is death and destruction. There is panic and scampering for cover. There is ego too. There is deception. Great deception. The racism, that permanent western European disease has reared its ugly face.

But back to basic. Russia is mighty and Russia is hated by the western Europe and Ukraine found itself an appendage to Western European and NATO geocentricism.

It is fact not fiction that the crisis is Ukraine is a direct consequence of the provocative activities of western countries, (the USA and its allies) which made Russia feel insecure and vulnerable.

Worse still, when you consider that in the 1990s, USA and its allies promised Russia that they would not expand NATO to the east and yet today we see five expansions.

The US and its allies have taken the expansion right to Russia’s border. How should Russia feel?

We in the village do not have short memory.  We have seen the UN Security Council grandstanding on Ukraine since this current crisis and yet in 1998, we saw USA undertaking a military operation in Yugoslavia without any sanction from the same UN Security Council.  It bombed cities and civil infrastructure and no one said a word.

Then we saw  the US in Iraq, Libya and Syria, countries that did not put so much of a threat to the west because of their geographical locations but there was a lot of oil there. It is a game of maverick. The nonconformists.
