Ruwa board chair suspended

The MDC-T councillor becomes one of several councillors from that party to be suspended or fired for corruption. He is accused of stealing US$2 000 from the council.

Secretary for Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Mr Killian Mpingo confirmed the suspension.

“The court case compromises his credibility. He is facing dishonesty charges so we have suspended him,” said Mr Mpingo.

Allegations against Clr Mushayavanhu are that he claimed money and fuel from council last year as travel and subsistence allowances for business trips to Beitbridge, Bulawayo, Gweru and Victoria Falls but failed to turn up at the scheduled meetings.

When he appeared in court recently the State case was that he converted the money and fuel to personal use.

In April last year he was supposed to attend a finance subcommittee meeting in Gweru and Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo.

Clr Mushayavanhu allegedly claimed 50 litres of petrol worth US$71.50 from council for the purpose of the trip but allegations are that he did not fulfill the trip.

On May 31, Clr Mushayavanhu was scheduled to attend a Mayors’ Forum in Beitbridge. He was allegedly given US$855 as travel and subsistence allowance for his business trip. He also received 141 litres of fuel worth US$202, the court was told.

Sometime in June last year he is also alleged to have received US$840 and 201 litres of petrol worth US$287 on the pretext he was going to attend a finance sub-committee meeting in Victoria Falls. He again failed to attend, the court heard.
