RYAN CAIRNS has a good chance to make the cut in the Dimension Data Pro-Am at Montagu Golf Course in Fancourt, South Africa.
Cairns finished the first round on two-under-par 70 before spending the better part of yesterday’s second round on one-under-par overall.
Micky Hough was on level par 72 on the first day before he finished on one-over-par after the first two rounds.

Sheldon Steyn continued to struggle and was totally out of contention during the second round where he finished on eight-over-par.

Three Zimbabweans had entered the Dimension Data Pro-Am, which is one of the Sunshine Tour’s prime events, with a R4 million prize fund.

Cairns is yet to make the cut this season.

Last year Cairns made it through to the final round where he finished on five-over-par overall while Hough could not last the distance as he fell by the wayside after the first two rounds.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe’s junior golf teams to take part in the Curro South African Junior Championships have stepped up their preparations ahead of the tourney next week.

The Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association president, Brian Maphosa, said he was happy with the progress made so far.

“The players are doing well and they have been putting in a lot of effort since the team was announced,” Maphosa said.

“We are looking forward to bringing the trophy home this time as we have good players. The guys are training as individuals and we will leave the country on Friday and the tournament will begin on Monday.

“The players are happy to represent the country and the exposure will be good for them as they are still to learn a lot of things.”

The team consists of Stuart Krog, Jack Allard, Mbongeni Maphosa, Kieran Vincent, Travis Smith, and Justin Kirsten while Melford Sibanda is a non-travelling reserve.

The tournament is a 54-hole individual stroke play to be played over three days.
