SOUTH AFRICAN trombone player, vocalist, lyricist and songwriter, Siya Makuzeni said Zimbabwe was full of amazing talent and was planning on collaborating with Zimbabweans. Makuzeni who performed at just ended October Music Festival at the Book Café on Saturday said she enjoyed working with Zimbabwean artistes.

“Being my first time in Zimbabwe, I didn’t have the chance to see and experience a lot. I am planning on returning to Harare to meet more musicians for collaborations,” she said.

Asked if she could join forces with artistes from other genres, the pint-size artiste said: “Actually, I am a versatile artiste. I am not interested one genre. In my country though I am known as a jazz artiste I have performed with musicians that play Neguma music from Cape Town,” she said.

Makuzeni said her music is influenced by her surroundings.
“I believe music is a broad spectrum that should be looked at and experienced. For me, I am an all-rounder musician who appreciates and look forward to collaborate with musicians from different genres,” said Makuzeni.

Makuzeni felt at home with the hospitality she got from Zimbabweans.
“I had a warm welcome from the people in Zimbabwe. I think they liked my music and it is not always easy to get this kind of reception in a foreign country,” she said.

She picked up the trombone in 1997 in high school, and went on to study jazz at Rhodes University and then at Pretoria Technikon Music School.

Other performers included African Pride, Were and Victor Kunonga who was the main act at the week-long festival.
