JOHANNESBURG — South African police seized 50 kg drugs on Wednesday, including heroin and cocaine.
The drugs, worth about US$7 million, were seized by the elite unit of Hawks in Johannesburg, said police spokesperson Paul Ramaloko.
The Hawks is the South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation under the South African Police Service (SAPS), targeting organised crime, economic crime, corruption and other serious crimes.
Minister of police Nathi Mthethwa expressed satisfaction with the success achieved by Hawks, saying “the latest drug bust is consistent with our resolve as government to crumble drug syndicates.” Two foreign suspects will appear in court soon, facing charges of smuggling drugs.
During the last two years, drugs worth 95 million rands have been confiscated by police, with more than 600 people arrested in South Africa. — Xinhua.
