adminCAPE TOWN. – The South African government yesterday paid tribute to the achievements of BRICS in regional and international affairs. “Since its first summit in 2009, BRICS has consolidated its position as a positive force for the democratisation of international relations and for the enhancement of existing institutions of international governance,” Deputy Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Luwellyn Landers said at a Press briefing in Cape Town.
BRICS, he said, has also forged an impressive partnership carrying out co-operation initiatives in more than 30 areas between its members.
BRICS is the acronym for the major emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The grouping is to hold its sixth summit in Brazil from July 14 to July 16.
The theme of the summit will be “BRICS – Inclusive growth: Sustainable solutions” .The leaders will also discuss other issues regarding global governance and peace and security as well as the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA) and reports on progress towards the establishment of the BIRCS-led New Development Bank (NDB).
Landers said South African President Jacob Zuma will lead a delegation to the summit.
The sixth BRICS summit will be the first to be hosted in the second cycle of BRICS summits and provides an opportune moment to reflect on the priority areas for co-operation during the second cycle of BRICS summits.
During South Africa’s tenure as chairperson, substantive progress was achieved in anchoring the new BRICS mechanisms that were launched at the fifth BRICS summit, i.e. the BRICS Business Council as well as the BRICS Think Tanks Council.- Xinhua.
