JOHANNESBURG. — South Africa is joining the international community in promoting Somali peace and reconstruction, the foreign affairs department announced yesterday. Bringing together the important members of the international community and the senior representatives of the federal government of Somalia, the conference held in Belgium will emphasise at the Somali political vision, security mechanism, social and economic reconstruction, said South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Co-operation in a statement.
Somalia has been torn by its factional fighting since 1991, which has left civilians dead, wounded and displaced in large numbers.
With the purpose of lending impetus to the positive peace momentum in Somalia, the conference is expected to reach an agreement or a memorandum of understanding that will assist Somalia to maintain peace and stability, laying the basis for its social reconstruction and development.
The volatile situation of Somalia has caught the wide attention from other African countries.
As the biggest African economy, South Africa has called on all Somalis to join the peace process that has been embarked on, pledging to work closely with Somalia to bring the country to stability. — Xinhua.
