SA national killed in motorcycle accident

The accident happened on Friday.

The injured man and the dead man were taken to Masvingo General Hospital. The body was taken to the mortuary awaiting a postmortem.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Matake confirmed the accident that happened at 14:47pm near Great Zimbabwe Hotel.

He said the name of the deceased is still being withheld until his next of kin have been notified.

Insp Matake said the dead South African was travelling with his colleague, one David Crain (62), on motorbikes from Harare going back to the neighbouring country via Beitbridge Border Post but they had decided to make a stopover at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments.

“When they reached the 22km peg along Masvingo-Great Zimbabwe, an ox suddenly appeared on the road from the left side and the deceased swerved to the other side, trying to avoid the animal but he hit it on its shoulder and he sustained serious body injuries leading to his death.

“His friend, who was also riding on his own motorbike and was behind, crushed into the friend and sustained injuries.

“The injured was ferried to Masvingo General Hospital and the dead man’s body is also at the same hospital awaiting postmortem before repatriation to his home country,” said Insp Matake.

In an interview at the scene of the accident, the dead man’s friend said they were a group of six South Africans travelling from Harare.
