The Southern Africa Network for Immigrants and Refugees (SANIR) has strongly condemned the recent violent attacks on migrants in the Addo area, Eastern Cape, where three foreign nationals were killed in alleged revenge attacks following the death of a young local man.
In a statement on Tuesday, SANIR said so far, over 430 people have been displaced, and more than 20 injured, including vulnerable groups who are seeking refuge at the AFM Church in Port Elizabeth and nearby schools.
“SANIR is calling for urgent Government intervention, a thorough investigation, and humanitarian support for displaced persons. The organization urges communities to reject xenophobia and work together to restore peace and solidarity,” said SANIR.
According to police in Eastern Cape, a South African man was killed on Saturday night in a bar Valencia Township in Addo, allegedly by an immigrant, which triggered revenge attacks where immigrants were targeted at random.
Mr Kevin Mapurisa, a Zimbabwean community leader who has lived in the area for over 15 years told South African media that the violence was alarming.
Bongani Ndlovu
