South African Airways (SAA) announced today that the pilots’ strike, which began on December 5, has been suspended following successful negotiations between SAA Executive Management and the South African Airways Pilots Association (SAAPA).
The resolution, reached at 02:00, includes an additional 1% salary increase for pilots, resulting in a total increase of 9.47%. This agreement marks a significant step in addressing the grievances that led to the strike, which had disrupted operations and affected numerous travelers.
Professor Lamola, SAA’s Chief Executive, stated, “As part of the agreement that broke the deadlock in wage negotiations, engagements on a continuous enterprise improvement program will continue over the next eight weeks. We are committed to implementing work-life concessions that should enhance the productivity of our world-acclaimed pilots.”
With the strike suspended, SAA plans to restore its full flight schedule by Sunday, December 8, 2024. More than 100 pilots are expected to return to their duties by noon today, which will facilitate the resumption of services.
