THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union has started hunting for a new Sables team manager following the resignation of Losson Mtongwiza last week.
The former ZRU vice-president resigned from his position as the rugby flagship sides’ team manager following allegations of institutional racism against the black administrators within the sport.
“I have retired from all forms of rugby and feel happy that I have done my part, but I leave on a sad note. I feel now is the time to give the next best man the job so that our team can qualify for the World Cup,” said Mtongwiza.
However, yesterday the ZRU began their search for Mtongwiza’s replacement as they try to steady their ship that is currently going through stormy waters ahead of their final campaign for the World Cup set for England next year.
The advert, which is on the ZRU website, indicates that the rugby mother-body is looking for someone who has a rugby background.
“Applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates with traceable references and a proven track record, in the field of sports management, and specifically related to rugby are invited to make application for the position of team manager of the Zimbabwe national XV’s rugby team,” read part of the notice.
“Responsibilities will include management of all off-field operational issues with regard to team management of the squad in preparations for and on all international assignments as designated by (the) Zimbabwe Rugby (Union).
“Player welfare (management) and reporting on discipline issues, medical emergencies, daily run sheets and timing, responsible for distribution and care of training equipment and playing kit and management of all financial issues relating to players.
“(Offer) Support to the players and management to ensure successful, professional international assignments. Applications, including all relevant documentation, CV and contact details, may be submitted in writing and applications should reach the ZRU offices no later than Wednesday, March 12, 2014.”
Unlike the previous constitution, the new ZRU constitution does not make it a must that open vacancies within the Union should be advertised in a national newspaper.
Section 26 Article 16 of the latest ZRU constitution reads: “To appoint an agent or agents to represent them for any specific purpose, including the power to employ accountants, attorneys, advocates, and other professional persons for any specific purpose and to remunerate such persons at the usual professional or business rates.
“In engaging these, preference shall be given to ZRU members and the secretariat shall advertise any professional consultancies to all members.”
