ESIGODINI-based Sacred Heart High School has cemented its place among the country’s leading drama institutions after clinching first place at the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) national drama competitions.
The school outperformed 10 other competitors, including Zezani High and Manama High, which took second and third place, respectively, a win that has brought pride to both the school and the Matabeleland region.
The winning production was directed by rising film maestro Mike “Mikito” Muderere from Nkulumane, whose mentorship and innovative approach inspired the learners to deliver a standout performance.

“We introduced a game-changing concept called ‘Journalism in Theatre’, which blends journalistic principles with performance. This allowed students to explore real-life issues such as relationships and surprises, making their storytelling more relatable and thought-provoking,” said Muderere.
He said the school’s success came from empowering students to take ownership of their stories and express their personal experiences on stage.
“We encouraged our young thespians to embrace ‘the art of telling my story’. By drawing from their own emotions and life experiences, they delivered performances that were authentic and emotionally rich,” he said.
Performing under the theme “Surprise”, the students explored youth relationships with unexpected twists and emotional depth, earning them top honours and individual awards.
“Not only did the school take home the top prize, but we also received the Best Director Award, while one of our students was recognised as Best Actor. It was an unforgettable experience and a proud moment for everyone involved,” Muderere said.
He commended Sacred Heart High School’s administration, patrons, and teachers for their continued investment in the arts and their commitment to nurturing student talent.
“The school deserves full credit for this achievement. Their support, from costumes and props to stage design and script development, made a huge difference. Their belief in our vision and in the students’ creativity was the driving force behind this success,” he said. —@mthabisi_mthire
