HARARE, 20 October 2024 – As the Southern African Development Community (SADC) prepares for Anti-Sanctions Day on 25 October, discussions are intensifying around the profound impacts of sanctions on Zimbabwe’s economy and the fundamental human rights of its citizens.
UN Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan said: “Over the past 20 years, sanctions have had an insidious ripple effect on the economy of Zimbabwe and the enjoyment of fundamental human rights.” Her remarks underscore the urgent need for dialogue and action against what many view as detrimental external pressures.
This year’s observance will be held under the theme “Embracing Innovation Towards Vision 2030: The Relentless Fight Against Illegal Sanctions.” The initiative seeks to galvanize support for economic resilience and innovation as Zimbabwe aims to overcome the challenges posed by sanctions and work towards sustainable development goals.
Activists and Government officials alike are expected to participate in various events leading up to the day, calling for the removal of sanctions that they argue stifle growth and exacerbate social inequalities in the nation. The campaign, promoted with hashtags like #ZimSanctionsMustGo and #5DaysToGo, seeks to raise awareness and mobilise public support for the cause.
