BAKU, Azerbaijan — In a significant diplomatic engagement, Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairman and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa met with his Belarusian counterpart, President Aleksandr Lukashenko, on the sidelines of the ongoing COP29 Summit.

The meeting underscores the strengthening ties between Zimbabwe and Belarus, which have developed over several years.

The relationship between the two nations has been bolstered since President Lukashenko’s official State visit to Zimbabwe in January 2023, where the leaders discussed enhancing cooperation across various sectors. Both countries share mutual interests in economic development and political solidarity, particularly in the face of international sanctions and geopolitical challenges.

During their discussions at COP29, the leaders are expected to address climate change initiatives and explore collaborative efforts to promote sustainable development in their respective regions. The meeting highlights Belarus’s growing influence in Africa and the commitment of SADC leaders to foster partnerships that benefit their nations amidst global environmental challenges.
