THE Southern African Development Community (Sadc) will deploy its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to Zambia ahead of the country’s General Election scheduled for August 13, 2026, reaffirming the regional bloc’s commitment to promoting credible, peaceful and transparent democratic processes across Southern Africa.
In a Press statement issued on Thursday from Gaborone, Botswana, the SADC Secretariat said the observation mission will be deployed in line with Article 8.1 of the Revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021).
“The Mission forms part of SADC’s continued commitment to promoting democratic governance, credible electoral processes, consolidating peace, security and political stability across the region,” the Secretariat said.
The deployment process begins on 27 July 2026 with the arrival of the SADC Secretariat Support Team in Lusaka to establish the Mission Headquarters and coordinate technical, administrative and logistical arrangements.
The observation mission will remain in Zambia until 24 August 2026, allowing both short-term and long-term observers to assess the entire electoral process.
According to the Secretariat, election observers will undergo a four-day refresher training programme from 1 to 4 August, before graduating on 5 August.
The official launch of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission is scheduled for 6 August, after which observers will be deployed across Zambia’s 10 provinces to monitor pre-election activities, polling day and the immediate post-election period.
During the mission, the Head of Mission, supported by the SADC Organ Troika and the SADC Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC), will engage a broad range of electoral stakeholders, including government institutions, the Electoral Commission of Zambia, political parties, civil society organisations, academia and the diplomatic community.
The Secretariat said these consultations are designed to provide “a comprehensive assessment of the electoral environment in accordance with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.”
On polling day, observers will monitor the opening of polling stations, voting, the closing process, vote counting and other critical stages of the electoral process.
The Mission is expected to present its Preliminary Statement on 15 August 2026, outlining its initial assessment of the conduct of the elections, while a comprehensive final report will be prepared following the completion of long-term observation activities.
“SADC remains committed to supporting Member States in strengthening democratic institutions and electoral processes through impartial and professional election observation,” the Secretariat said.
It added that the deployment of the mission reflects the regional body’s” “enduring commitment to fostering peace, democratic stability and good governance as essential pillars of regional integration and sustainable development.”
