adminIncoming Sadc chair of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation, Lesotho’s Prime Minister Thomas Motsoahae Thabane, will head a committee tasked with dealing with regional hotspots.
Lesotho’s Premier will assume the chairmanship at next month’s Sadc Heads of State and Government Summit in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and will hold the position for two years.
President Mugabe will be appointed Sadc chair at the same indaba.
Among the challenges facing the region is the ongoing civil strife in the DRC where rebel groups continue to act with near impunity.
In Mozambique, Renamo rebels threaten not only the country’s peace and security, but of the region as well.
Having recently lifted Madagascar’s suspension from the regional body, the organ will also oversee the smooth rehabilitation of the island nation back into the bloc.
PM Thabane is also a close ally of President Mugabe.
During a three-day State visit to Zimbabwe in 2012, he said his country was praying for President Mugabe to take a leading role in Sadc.
“When we were in confusion, President Mugabe and Sadc stood by the people of Lesotho.
“The recent May elections brought a coalition government for the first time thanks to (President) Mugabe and Sadc.
“What is left is to make the gains truly irreversible.”
