SADC Executive Secretary Mr Elias Magosi has thrown his full weight behind Zimbabwe’s candidature for a United Nations Security Council Non-Permanent Seat for 2027–2028, calling on the entire UN family to support the bid.
Mr Magosi, who voiced his support on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York, said Zimbabwe’s bid was not only in line with Africa’s aspirations but also backed by the country’s proven leadership credentials.
He hailed President Mnangagwa’s immense contribution during his tenure as SADC chair, expressing confidence in Zimbabwe’s ability to bring value to the UN Security Council.
“Zimbabwe is not a small country or small outfit and what they are bringing to the UN peace and security council, so we can only urge all UN family to rally behind and support Zimbabwe,” said Mr Magosi.
He underscored the alignment of Zimbabwe’s bid with Africa’s common position on enhancing representation and strengthening the continent’s voice within the multilateral system.
Mr Magosi also urged the global community to return to the founding values of the United Nations, especially when considering Zimbabwe’s candidature.
He pointed to President Mnangagwa’s pivotal role in co-chairing the East African Community (EAC) initiative alongside President Ruto, commending his emphasis on dialogue as a pathway to peace.
Mr Magosi said President Mnangagwa’s leadership was instrumental in promoting the principle that peace is not achievable without engagement.
The bid, spearheaded by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Professor Amon Murwira, was launched under the theme “Advancing 21st Century Solutions for Global Peace and Security through Multilateralism.”
President Mnangagwa said once elected, Zimbabwe will focus on promoting global peace and security, silencing the guns and combating terrorism, strengthening partnerships with regional organisations and championing the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda.
