THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) is strengthening its commitment to disaster resilience by actively participating in the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025), currently underway in Geneva.
The Forum started from June 2 and ends on June 6.
SADC said with climate change intensifying floods, droughts and storms across the region, the regional bloc’s engagement in the global forum underscores the urgency of adopting comprehensive disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies.
The regional bloc which is represented by its Secretariat, joins global stakeholders to evaluate progress on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030.
“The GP2025 serves as a key platform for reviewing DRR implementation, sharing best practices, and identifying gaps. High-level dialogues and technical sessions at the event focus on early warning systems, integrating DRR into development plans and empowering communities to manage risks effectively,” SADC said in a statement.
SADC is also contributing to the presentation of the Draft Africa Common Position for DRR, a unified continental response supported by the African Union.
“The position is grounded in the Africa Programme of Action and aligned with the Sendai Framework, highlighting Africa’s shared goal of safeguarding lives and promoting sustainable development.”
The forum brings together governments, NGOs, academia, the private sector and civil society to drive evidence based policy, inclusive partnerships and resilient development. SADC’s active participation reflects its ongoing commitment to building disaster-resilient communities and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
GP2025 is convened by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and mandated by the UN General Assembly.
