THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) announced an upcoming Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for 20th November 2024 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The summit will focus on assessing and addressing the security situation in the region, particularly in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to the press release, “The Summit will be chaired by His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and Chairperson of SADC.”
The primary agenda will include an update on the Sadc Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (SAMIDRC), a regional initiative aimed at restoring peace, security, and stability in the conflict-affected areas of the DRC.
The SADC deployed SAMIDRC on 15th December 2023 with a one-year mandate to “pave the way for sustainable development in the DRC.” This mission is seen as a critical regional response to escalating violence in the eastern DRC, to create a secure environment that would encourage development and stability.
The Extraordinary Summit will be preceded by the SADC Organ Troika Summit, chaired by Tanzanian President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, who also serves as the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation.
The agenda includes consultations among SADC Senior Officials and the Ministerial Committee of the Organ, which will further analyse the security dynamics and offer insights to inform the heads of State meeting.
