adminaction gets underway this weekend, there were genuine fears among soccer fans in Mutare that the stadium could be barred from hosting Premiership matches owing to the poor state of the turf.
This would have left army side Buffaloes FC, the sole resident Premiership outfit in the eastern border city, scouting for an alternative venue in either Chiredzi or Marondera.
However, the local authority recently undertook some renovations and the stadium is now in a much better shape.
Buffaloes’ spokesperson Tendai Chitowa said the local authority had done its part in implementing the recommendations made by the grounds committee.
“We are ready to host teams in fortress Sakubva after some renovations which were done as part of the recommendation by those who initially inspected the stadium. We are happy that we will not have the hustles of scouting for an alternative venue,” said Chitowa.
Although the Zifa and Premier Soccer League grounds committee representatives inspected the Mutare match venue on Wednesday and their report has not yet been made public, Premier Soccer League chief executive officer Kenny Ndebele confirmed that Buffaloes will host Monomotapa on Sunday at Sakubva.
“The match between Buffaloes and Monomotapa is going ahead at Sakubva stadium.
“Yes, there were some recommendations made to the effect that the local authority should work on the turf as well as other areas within the stadium but we are informed that it is now in a position to host top flight matches thus Sunday’s match is going ahead as scheduled,” Ndebele said.
