Residents and motorists have hailed Government for opening to traffic the reconstructed 6,5km stretch of Sam Nujoma Street Extension from the intersection with Cork Road to Harare Drive, saying this would ease congestion.

Fossil Contracting and Exodus and Company were contracted to conduct the works whose scope included widening and extending the dualisation right to the junction with Harare Drive.

Fossil started reconstructing the 2,8km from the intersection of Cork Road up to Nemakonde Way while Exodus and Company took over the 3,7km from Nemakonde Way to Harare Drive.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona yesterday led a delegation that witnessed the opening of the road to traffic.

Minister Mhona said: “People are saying we are doing these roads because of the SADC summit. Traditionally, when you have visitors you tend to clean up more than what you do on a daily basis, but I want to assure the public that this will continue long after the summit.

“We are progressing under the infrastructure development cluster under which we are witnessing a number of roads being rehabilitated, reconstructed.”

Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations of Residents Trust national chairperson Mr Shalvar Chikomba said the reconstructed road will facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.

Fossil Contracting head of operations Engineer Kudakwashe Maguta and Exodus and Company projects director Engineer Alex Mashangu narrated the challenges they overcame during the reconstruction of the road to be able to complete work on time.

Dr Manzungu said motorists were now enjoying the fruits of road projects.

“This is in line with National Development Strategy 1 one of whose main pillars is infrastructure development.”
