PROFESSIONAL hunter and guide Samuel Nkomo (46) has died.
Nkomo reportedly drowned at Hillside Dams in Bulawayo on Saturday after he slipped from a canoe into water.
Family spokesperson Mr Engelbert Karombo confirmed the incident.
He said: “Sam was out with friends last Saturday, when he accidentally fell in the dam. He was trying to paddle the canoe while standing. The other two people managed to swim to safety but he did not. One can never paddle a canoe in that position, as you know Sam loved his drink and had a bit too many when the accident occurred. It was unfortunate he could not be saved. His body was only retrieved on Sunday with the help of the police sub aqua unit,” he said.
Mr Karombo said funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
Family and friends gathered in Old Lobengula.
Bulawayo acting provincial deputy police spokesperson Inspector Abednego Ncube could not comment on the incident saying he was out of town.
Nkomo was widely known for his noble wildlife campaigns, which saw him literally walking many distances to raise awareness about the importance of conserving wildlife.
