The 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo, officially opens today in Mutare, marking a historic milestone for Manicaland Province and signalling a new era of economic rejuvenation anchored on tourism-led growth and development.
Held under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development – Our Future”, the landmark event is poised to unlock vast economic potential for the eastern province, as it hosts Africa’s leading tourism business exchange for the first time.
Running from September today to 12 at Mutare Sports Club, the Expo is already catalysing economic activity in the region, with ripple effects expected to extend across sectors such as hospitality, retail, transport and informal trade.
Accommodation facilities in and around the city are fully booked, with the influx of international buyers, investors and exhibitors triggering an uptick in demand for services ranging from catering to logistics.
Several operators in the tourism value chain are experiencing a surge in business, with hotels, restaurants, taxis and informal vendors benefiting from the event’s economic pull.
This year’s edition has attracted exhibitors and buyers from key international markets such as China, Ghana, Indonesia, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Tanzania and South Africa.
The global visibility is positioning Manicaland and Zimbabwe at large, as a competitive tourism destination.
In an interview, Mountain Lake Resort and Spa general manager, Ms Keara Shumba, said the decentralisation of the expo represents a strategic breakthrough for the Eastern Highlands.
“The decentralisation of the expo challenges us to step outside of our comfort zones and collaborate. The Eastern Highlands is Zimbabwe’s most stunning region and this exposure through Sanganai is invaluable,” she said.
Many tourists have taken time to immerse themselves in nature through hiking, birdwatching, sightseeing and cultural tours.
The atmosphere is vibrant, with tour guides, families and solo adventurers all soaking in the unique charm of the Eastern Highlands.
