Sanyati District Administrator Mr Amigo Mhlanga has bemoaned lack of proper co-ordination among stakeholders and the Civil Protection Unit in the area.
His reaction follows a recent fire outbreak that destroyed three shops in Ingezi suburb in Kadoma where the local authority was exposed for lack of proper fire equipment.
Mr Mhlanga, who is also the CPU district chairperson, said a review meeting held last week also showed that the Kadoma Municipality had not installed a fire hydrant in the area.
The meeting was held to assess the district’s state of preparedness in case of dis- aster.
“We held a meeting last week to assess our state of alertness in case of disaster outbreaks and we discovered that there was no proper co-ordination with the local CPU.
“There is also a scenario were various Government departments have their own equipment, the same with the councils and probably ZESA, too. The challenge is in co-ordinating and connecting these units when disaster strikes.”
Mr Mhlanga said recent disasters were a clear testimony that there was lack of proper co-ordination.
“There is a local farm where people were intoxicated with carbon. Little did we know that one of our local authorities had resources to deal with such a disaster,” he said.
He expressed concern that the Kadoma City Council had not secured a hydrant in Ingezi suburb.
Kadoma City Council officials failed to put out a fire that engulfed three shops injuring 10 people as they failed to secure water to fight the out- break.
