ZIMBABWE’S premier golf tournament is back and Sports Minister, Anselem Sanyatwe, says the FBC Zimbabwe Open is a “world-class celebration of legacy, pride and power.”
Sanyatwe was in a bullish mood as he officially launched the tournament, which is set to tee off at Royal Harare on Thursday.
“This is more than just golf, it’s a reflection of our heritage, a platform for excellence, and a brand-builder for Zimbabwe on the global stage,” said Sanyatwe.
The tournament is one of the Sunshine Tour’s biggest events.
Sanyatwe praised the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA), saluting the tournament’s role in honouring trailblazing stars like Nick Price, Tony Johnstone and Mark McNulty, legends who took Zimbabwe to the top.
“We applaud our golf athletes for their relentless efforts to raise Zimbabwe’s image. They are true ambassadors,” he said.
Backed by a US$200,000 prize pot, this year’s Zimbabwe Open is once again sponsored by FBC Holdings, securing its place among the top three events on the Sunshine Tour calendar.
Sanyatwe said the tournament showcases more than sporting excellence, it’s a driver of tourism, investment, and national pride.
“Golf gives us a unique edge. Our landscapes and sunny climate make Zimbabwe a dream destination for golf tourism,” he said.
“We are fully committed to positioning Zimbabwe as a premier golfing and leisure hotspot in Africa and beyond.”
And he wasn’t done swinging.
“Today’s success would not be possible without the steadfast support of the corporate sector,” he said.
“Sport creates a ripple effect, from tourism earnings to jobs in hospitality, logistics, media and more. It stretches far beyond the fairways.”
But this year’s event isn’t just about trophies and tee shots. In a bold new chapter, the 2025 Zimbabwe Open is launching the Zimbabwe Open Wellness Fund under the theme: “Swing for Wellness.”
“This initiative goes beyond the game. It’s about saving lives through cancer awareness and treatment, and building a healthier nation,” Sanyatwe announced.
“Sport must uplift communities, and this is exactly the kind of impact-driven initiative we need.”
He rallied the nation, corporates, individuals, and stakeholders, to back the cause generously, calling it a national duty.
“I am confident that the 2025 FBC Zimbabwe Open shall be an unforgettable celebration of sport, legacy, and social impact.
“Let’s all work together to make it a resounding success, a testament to our commitment to sporting excellence for generations to come,” said Sanyatwe. More than 144 golfers, including 11 amateurs, are set to storm Royal Harare, with defending champion Michael Hollick returning to defend his crown.
