TWO hundred police officers yesterday left for Tanzania for the annual Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Corporation (SARPCCO) Games to be held in Dar es Salaam next month.
The team comprises 175 participants, who will compete in six sporting disciplines – football, netball, athletics, darts, chess and volleyball.
Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe, said the regional police sports competition epitomises the beauty of sport as a universal unifier given the region has diverse perspectives on social, political and economic views.
“Sport affords you an opportunity, as police officers, to mix and mingle and share the joys and contemporary policing.
“I have also noticed that over the years, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has been sending a full contingent to all editions of the SARPCCO Games.
“I must concede that this feat could not be possible without the longstanding support we continuously receive from members of the public and the corporate world.
“Allow me, on behalf of the Government, to convey my heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to our valued sponsors for supporting this sporting extravaganza,” said Minister Kazembe.
He urged participants to maintain high levels of discipline, as they have done in previous Games, and shun all forms of behaviour that might tarnish the good image of the organisation and the nation.
Minister Kazembe also urged them to guard against incidents of syndicated doping scandals by athletes in connivance with other officials.
A number of corporates sponsored the team, with sporting attire, soccer balls, cash, beverages and accommodation.
Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries provided accommodation for the team’s camp.
Former Warriors’ forward Edward Sadomba was also among the sponsors.
