Students at Seke Agricultural Training Institute in Chitungwiza yesterday rioted and held hostage the school administration staff for failing to give them some money promised for projects when they enrolled at the college.
Police had to be called in to quell the riot and free the staff some of whom wanted to travel to Korea.
The college, which opened in February, was built by the Korean government and was meant to complement Zimbabwe’s land reform programme.
The college’s administration had told the students that it could only give them US$200, an amount the students said was not enough to start viable projects. Police in Chitungwiza confirmed the riot and said they picked some students and the staff whom they encouraged to solve the matter amicably.
One of the students Mr Alvis Chifuwo said they expected between US$2 000 and US$6 000 each to start their projects.
