Tapuwa, a Grade 4 pupil at Dominican Convent Primary School in Harare, received this year’s first prize of £1 000 for her colourful picture that was entitled “Make the World a Better Place, Stop Cutting Down Trees!”
Tapuwa will use the money to buy books and other educational materials.
Speaking at the ceremony, Head of the European Union Delegation to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Aldo Dell’Ariccia said Tapuwa will be a model to other students who will be motivated in next year’s event.
“I am proud of Tapuwa’s achievement and we hope this will encourage more students to enter the competition next year.
“A tree has to be planted at the school to recognise the importance Tapuwa gave to the environment and on her commitment to environmental issues,” Ambassador Dell’Ariccia said.
This year’s Gender Drawing Competition was launched on March 8, which is the International Women’s Day.
Its aim was to encourage children aged between eight and 10 years to express their understanding of gender equality through art.
In December this year, an exhibition of the best drawings will take place at the “Musée des Enfants” (Children’s museum) in Brussels between December 7 and 26.
The exhibition will be officially opened in November in the presence of some of the six regional winners.
