Prompt reaction by school authorities foiled an early marriage attempt by a 13-year old girl who had eloped to her 16-year old boyfriend. The Form One girl at Mosi-oa-Tunya High School in Victoria Falls had cohabited with her boyfriend for three days when police intervened after being alerted by school authorities.

The boyfriend is a pupil at Lulu Academy, a private school in the resort town.

The girl’s grandmother reported her missing to the school authorities and they quickly alerted the police who then took her back to her grandmother.

Mosi-oa-Tunya High School headmaster Roland Sibanda said when they received the report on the missing pupil they immediately alerted the police.

“We’ve counselled the girl and she is back at school,” said Sibanda.

Acting police spokesperson for Matabeleland North Province, Assistant Inspector Mandlenkosi Ndlovu said they received a report about the missing girl but could not give further details on the incident.

“We can confirm that we received a missing person report concerning a Mosi-oa-Tunya High School pupil.

However, I can’t give details on the incident but the girl has since been found,” said Asst Insp Ndlovu.
