Organisers of the event made the decision to postpone after consultations with stakeholders pointed to the need to refocus preparations and adjust timelines to ensure a more effective festival management framework.
“As this will be the second edition of the Special Schools Arts Festival, we plan on growing the event and providing a better experience for our participants and audience.
“We therefore found it prudent from a logistical, management and production perspective to extend the time we should put into preparations. We stay committed to providing the best value for all our stakeholders and the event will definitely take place on the new date – June 22, 2013,” said the festival’s founder, Trust Mutekwa.
The festival has a diverse programme of arts categories that include music, drama, visual arts, fabrics, painting, sculpture and crafts. Running under the theme “Breaking Barriers”, the arts showcase seeks to promote the participation of children with disabilities in mainstream creative industry.
The showcase is a unique festival concept that combines performances, exhibitions, workshops and interaction among participants, arts educators, established artistes and members of the public. Prizes will also be given to participants with outstanding work and to members of the public who take part in the festival quiz on disability and arts.
Schools that are participating in this year’s edition of the festival include Emerald Hill School for the Deaf, Danhiko Secondary School, Munashe Special School, Mutendi Resource Units for the Blind, Jairos Jiri Southerton, ZimCARE Special Schools, Copota School for the Blind, Jairos Jiri Kadoma for the Blind, Murehwa Resource Unit for the Blind, St Giles Special School and Sibantubanye Special School. – CL Reporter.
