PARENTS whose children attend Mukaro High School in Gutu have blasted the Roman Catholic Diocese of Masvingo for closing the institution on Tuesday.
The Diocese closed the school saying the situation was tense at the school because of two “stubborn” teachers who were once suspended after being accused of masterminding a protest by pupils in 2012.
Parents and guardians who spoke to The Chronicle questioned Vicar General Father Walter Nyatsanza’s decision to shut down the school saying it would disadvantage pupils ahead of mid-year examinations.
Ward 29 Councillor Auxilia Mhuru, who has a child at the school, said the school should be re-opened as a matter of urgency.
“The authorities should listen to the voice of reason by re-opening the school. We always want our children’s right to education to be protected. The school should open while they deal with the teachers’ issue amicably. Children shouldn’t be affected,” said Clr Mhuru.
Gutu West MP Cde Tongai Muzenda, in whose constituency the school is located, expressed dismay over the closure saying the decision is ill-advised and he would meet the authorities over the matter.
“I’m very unhappy with the decision taken by Father Nyatsanza to close the school because they’ve an issue with two teachers. We’re more interested in the children’s education and I will meet the authorities over the issue so that the school can be re-opened soon,” said Cde Muzenda.
Terrence Ruredzo of Mucheke suburb in Masvingo, whose child is in Upper Six, had no kind words for authorities at the Roman Catholic church-run school.
“It’s us parents and our children who suffer most. They’ve been deprived of the time to learn and as it is my daughter is doing Upper Six and is writing final examinations in October this year. She needs to learn and finish her syllabus. The earlier they rescind this ill-advised decision the better. They should let our children enjoy what we paid for by re-opening the school,” said Ruredzo.
