THE local cultural scene is set for a major boost as schools from various regions prepare to converge in Bulawayo for a two-day Festival of Arts scheduled for July 31 and August 1.
The creative showcase will be hosted at Riverdale Academy. Running under the theme “Evolution of Arts”, the festival will explore the changing landscape of artistic expression, celebrating the balance between traditional heritage and modern creativity. Learners are expected to reflect on the past while reimagining the future through art.
A packed programme will feature theatre, visual arts, marimba, poetry and music, offering learners a platform to display their talent while engaging with peers from different schools and regions.
From dramatic stage productions and visual exhibitions to the rhythmic pulse of marimba and powerful spoken word performances, the festival promises a rich blend of creativity across multiple disciplines.
According to the host school’s arts department, preparations are at an advanced stage, with final touches being made to ensure a smooth and engaging experience.
“We’re excited about the level of interest and the opportunity to bring together creative minds from various schools. Preparations are progressing smoothly, and everything is falling into place as planned,” said a representative from the department.
The festival will be staged across four venues within the school, allowing for simultaneous performances and exhibitions, a setup expected to create a lively and immersive atmosphere for participants and audiences alike.
Beyond student performances, the event will also feature arts practitioners who will present and perform, offering mentorship and real-world insight into the creative industry.
Seasoned creatives are expected to share experiences on the future of the arts sector, while also showcasing their own work, in a deliberate effort to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.
Organisers say the inclusion of industry voices is meant to inspire learners to view the creative sector not just as a passion, but as a viable career path.
