PLUMTREE Bakery and Supermarket is sponsoring a soccer tournament that will be held for the first time at Plumtree High School on Sunday. In an interview yesterday the supermarket’s public relations officer and organiser Reuben Chirwa said eight local teams will participate. He said the tournament will run concurrently with a Family Fun Day.
“We are holding this tournament for the first time and we will be having two pools with four participants each. The first is the league teams’ category and the second being the social teams.
“The winner in each category will receive a floating trophy which is the main prize while we will be giving away prizes to the runners-up in each category. We will also be rewarding the top goal scorer, best goal keeper and the man of the tournament,” said Chirwa.
The rest of the teams will receive training equipment, medals and shopping vouchers.
Participating league teams are PS Academy, Plumtree Rollers, Plumtree Chiefs and Amaganyane.
Social teams are Plumtree, Kombani, Police and Loxion Culture.
Chirwa said the tournament was among other projects which the supermarket had lined up to develop the community.
“We realised that the town has a lot of untapped sporting talent. This therefore is our way of ploughing back to the community. The tournament will be held every August,” said Chirwa.
He called on other businesses to come on board and fund such community programmes.
Chirwa said besides holding the tournament they were constructing a tennis court which is nearing completion at Dingumuzi Business Centre.
He said once complete, the court would play host to tennis tournaments.
Plumtree District Soccer League chairman, Chakudza Mutarika applauded the supermarket for sponsoring the tournament.
“We appreciate this move by Plumtree Supermarket. This tournament will go a long way in improving sporting activities in Plumtree. Other businesses should therefore emulate this,” said Mutarika.
