Government has started holding consultations on how to assist schools with students who did not perform well during the 2018 Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council Ordinary Level exams, to improve their pass rates.
Although the bulk of schools on Manicaland produced good results last year, a few performed dismally. About 20 schools recorded between 0-20 percent pass rates.
Manicaland provincial education director Mr Edward Shumba said he had started holding meetings with heads of schools and School Development Committees (SDC) chairpersons at district level, to get their views on how to improve the low O-Level pass rate in their schools.
“So far I have been to Chipinge and Buhera meeting heads and SDC chairpersons of schools that had low O-Level pass rates,” he said.
“Basically, we want to come up with strategies to improve the pass rate of schools which scored 0 to 20 percent at 2018 O-Level results. The meetings have been fruitful, as the heads have been proposing good ideas on how we can improve the poor pass rates in future.”
Mr Shumba urged teachers to go the extra mile to ensure pupils achieve good results and also improve discipline, quality of teaching as well as supervision methods.
“Teachers should be dedicated to their work and their teaching methods should be changed to focus on skills. In addition, heads should also improve quality of supervision and discipline which helps in achieving a high pass rate,” he said.
“We are also assisting teachers to identify their strengths and weaknesses and helping them to overcome those.”
