Schumacher’s son starts career

BERLIN. — Michael Schumacher’s 16-year-old son starts his Formula Four career this weekend under the pressure of living up to the famous family name of the seven-time Formula One world champion.

After a successful karting career, Mick Schumacher Jnr has joined the Dutch Van Amersfoort Racing team in Europe’s ADAC Formula Four for the season which starts at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben between Hanover and Berlin.

“We are all pleased with how things are going. Mick makes few errors,” the team’s managing director Rob Niessink told German daily Bild.

“The talent is there, the preparation is there, the intelligence is there. We are proud to have a big name race for us, but the name alone won’t bring us any points. We’ll all have to work hard for those.”

Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel has become a patron of the 2015 Formula 4 series, the German newspaper Bild reports.

The German junior single-seater category kicks off at Oschersleben this weekend.

Ferrari driver Vettel said: “I know some of the young drivers on the start list.”

All of Vettel’s four titles at Red Bull were won at the wheel of an Adrian Newey-penned car, whose teenage son Harrison will star in Formula 4. Vettel also referred to Mick Schumacher, the 16-year-old son of his friend, mentor and F1 legend Michael.

Vettel admitted he regrets not being able to turn to Schumacher for advice when he weighed up joining Ferrari in 2015.

Vettel said: “I think I missed that part a lot simply because I knew he would tell me the truth of what he thinks.

“The honesty he had in giving me advice over the years is probably the most special thing about it.”

Michael Schumacher’s manager, Sabine Kehm, is reportedly working hard to keep news about the health of her famous client quiet.

Ever since Schumacher was injured during a skiing fall in 2013, Kehm has carefully guarded his privacy. — AFP.
