SEVERAL personalities in the Zifa Central Soccer League (CSL) are reportedly eyeing the region’s top post following the elevation of Felton Kamambo to the Zifa board.
Kamambo had been the CSL chairman since 2013 when he was elected unopposed.
Following a Zifa directive that elections be held to choose chairpersons for the Premier Soccer League (PSL), women’s football, Zifa Eastern Region and the CSL, several names are being thrown into the hat for the Central Region’s top job.
These include former PSL secretary-general Mwandibuya Mutepfa, who was a member of the inaugural CSL marketing committee in 2010, Zifa Midlands chairman Brian Chishanga, CSL board member Stanley Chapeta and former CSL chairman Patrick Hokonya.
Hokonya unceremoniously left his post in 2011 following a match-fixing scandal in 2010 that became known as Centralgate, but was later cleared of any wrongdoing.
While Hokonya and Mutepfa could not be reached for comment, Chishanga and Chapeta were non-committal about their job.
Chishanga, the longest serving Zifa councillor having been a member of the mother body’s assembly since 1993, said he would only consider taking the region’s top job after “consulting with stakeholders”.
“I’m still consulting with stakeholders on the way forward and at the moment I can’t say anything to that effect. I will come up with a firm position when I finish consultations and you will be the first to know,” said Chishanga, who supported newly elected Zifa president Phillip Chiyangwa.
Chapeta said he would only consider contesting the chairmanship if the clubs approached him.
“If the clubs want me to stand for that post I will. It’s not about you imposing yourself on the clubs,” said Chapeta, who has been in the CSL board since its inception in 2010.
