Hundreds of people thronged Africa Unity Square in Harare last night to witness the official lighting of Christmas lights. Acting Mayor of Harare Mr Chris Mbanga urged members of the public to share with the needy during this festive season.
“Today is a happy day in our calendar of events because it marks the beginning of the festive season in the Sunshine City,” he said.
“It is a day we begin the celebrations to mark the birth of Jesus Christ our Saviour. It is also a day we prepare for the New Year.
“While we give, share and receive among families and friends, let us remember the poor of our society who have no relatives or friends to share with them.”
Mr Mbanga said those that deserved help during the festive holidays were those in children’s homes, the elderly and anyone in difficult situations.
He urged the public to be responsible and careful to avoid road accidents.
“I am urging Harare residents and our visitors to take it easy during the festive season,” he said.
“When you drink, do so responsibly. Do not drink and drive. Harare needs your services as we march towards a world-class city by 2025.
“Our vision of a world-class city begins with you and all of us here.”
Commenting on the litter that had become a permanent featureof Harare, Mr Mbanga said: “Festive seasons are associated with a lot of drinking and eating and obviously littering.
“Take it upon yourselves to ensure a litter-free festive season. The city will do its part with the provision of bins and garbage collection vehicles and you should play your part by ensuring litter is disposed of correctly and appropriately.”
The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, Zim dancehall chanter Guspy Warrior and the Emerald Hill Choir, among others, provided entertainment at the ceremony.
