ZIMBABWE golf prodigy Scott Vincent’s Virginia Tech men’s golf team were holding a three-stroke lead over Maryland, entering the final round of the Janney VCU Shootout late last night in Virginia. Virginia Tech have a two-round total of three-over-par 579. The event, hosted by VCU, is being played on the 6 955-yard, par 72 Manakin Course at the Hermitage Country Club outside Richmond.

Scott Vincent, now a senior and junior Maclain Huge of Lovettesville, Virginia, were tied for seventh place at one-over-par 145.
The Hokies held a five-stroke lead after yesterday’s opening round, after they carded a one-under-par 287.

Tech followed that with a four-over-par 292 in the second round.
The Hokies are the two-time defending champions of the tournament and were leading the Terrapins by three strokes and Iowa State by 10 strokes.
Radford and hosts VCU were tied for fourth at 590, James Madison of Tech was sixth at 594 and UNCG was seventh at 595.

ODU sat on eighth place on 596, Richmond ninth at 604, Division II power Francis Marion was 10th at 605, Wichita State on 11th at 607, while Xavier was 12th at 609 and George Mason was 13th at 619.

The Hokies defeated runner-up Iowa State by 22 strokes to claim last year’s title, setting a new tournament record for margin of victory.
Vincent won the gold medal honours last season, defeating teammate Bryce Chalkley by four strokes.

Tech defeated Wichita State by nine strokes and outdistanced Long Beach State by 10 strokes to win the team title in 2012.
Tech’s 287 in the morning was the only under-par score in either round yesterday.

Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, was at even-par 144 and tied for third place, individually.
