WHILE their domestic form has won them plaudits, Zimbabwe champions Scottland will get their real first test of international football when they clash against South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in the Toyota Cup.

Chiefs invited Scottland to participate in this year’s edition of the pre-season show-piece to be staged at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg on July 26.

The Soweto giants confirmed the line for the third edition of the Toyota Cup via a press statement issued during the launch of this year’s tournament in Johannesburg yesterday.

“Kaizer Chiefs, in partnership with Toyota South Africa Motors, proudly launched the third edition of the Toyota Cup at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena this afternoon. The annual pre-season fixture has quickly established itself as a premier event on the football calendar. It combines competitive action for the team with entertainment and fan engagement in anticipation of the new season while also supporting communities through the Heart on Sleeve CSI initiative,’’ read part of the press statement.

This year, Amakhosi’s opponents are the reigning champions of Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League, Scottland FC. Scottland FC will boast prolific former Chiefs striker, Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat, among their ranks. Their participation underscores the Toyota Cup’s commitment to showcasing top African talent and strengthening regional and continental football ties.

“The Toyota Cup was inaugurated in 2024 when Kaizer Chiefs hosted Young Africans of Tanzania in Bloemfontein. The 2025 edition was held in Durban where Asante Kotoko of Ghana were the guests. Both events featured “legends’ matches as curtain-raisers, a tradition that continues this year.

“The 2026 Toyota Cup will take place on Sunday, 26 July at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg. With gates opening at 09:00 in the morning, the programme begins at 12:00 with a “legends” exhibition match between Kaizer Chiefs Legends and Jozi Masters. The “legends” match will feature former Bafana Bafana internationals and celebrated icons who have played for various teams. The main fixture between Kaizer Chiefs and Scottland FC will kick-off at 15:00.’’

Kaizer Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung expressed her club’s delight at staging yet another edition of the cup.

“We are delighted to welcome back the Toyota Cup for the third consecutive year. The match is important preparation for the team and new coach before we kick off the 2026/27 season.

“Reflecting on the past two editions fills us with pride, and we are grateful to Toyota for their continued partnership and support.

“We also extend our appreciation to the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace and the Royal Family for once again opening their doors to us,” Motaung said.

“We are thankful to Scottland FC for coming on board and are looking forward to giving our supporters a glimpse of the team with the new coach and his technical team before the season starts.

“The team will also be wearing our new home and away kits for the first time in the match. There’s a lot in store for our supporters and we encourage them to get their tickets early and ensure they book their seats, she said.

Kaizer Chiefs, who will be using the clash as part of preparations of the CAF Confederation Cup, have been home to several Zimbabwean players over the years including, the deadly duo of Musona and Billiat, who are currently playing for Scottland.

Musona was a darling of the Amakhosi faithful before the “Smiling Assasin’ left for Germany.

Ebson “Sugar” Muguyo, Rabson “Sarafina’’ Mchichwa, Thomasa Sweswe, Mike Maringa, Kelvin Mushangazhike, Abbas Amidu, Kingstone Nkatha, Luke Petros-Jukulile, Tinashe Nengomasha, Ovidy Karuru, Zhaimu Jambo and Willard Katsande are some of the Zimbabwean players who donned the famous gold and black jersey.

Back home Scottland have begun to exert their influence in the 2026 championship race.

With eight clean sheets in their last 10 matches, it is not a surprise that the champions have the best defence in the domestic league.

Thanks to that solid rearguard, Mabviravira have conceded just six goals in 16 games, at a commendable 0.3 goals per game.

In the last 10 rounds, Scottland have recorded eight clean sheets, including four in a row in their last four games.

Norman Mapeza’s men are yet to concede since May 13, when they beat AGAMA 2-1 at Wadzanai in Shamva.

They have one defeat in 16 rounds and are joint top on the log with Hardrock and CAPS United, who also have 31 points each.

In fact, only goal difference separates the three top teams on the standings.

Having built his FC Platinum’s championship winning sides on the back of a strong defence, Mapeza could be executing the same plan to effect at Scottland.

When he was still at FC Platinum, he won three league titles in 2017, 2018 and 2022, thanks to a mean defence.

He is now building the same mean machine at Scottland who are out to defend their league title.

Although Mapeza is not willing to talk about the league championship, at least for now, it is clear Scottland are strong favourites to retain the title, if their recent form is anything to go by.

The Mabvuku outfit have raked in 13 points out of a possible 15 in the last five rounds, which translates to an 87 percent success rate.

Scottland are the only team in the league to have won the last three consecutive matches.

“It’s early days (to start thinking about the title),” Mapeza told the media soon after his side’s 2-0 victory over Herentals at Rufaro on Saturday.

“For us, we just need to take the games as they come, collect maximum points and see what happens at the end of the season.

“What is important right now is to just focus on each game and get maximum points,” added Mapeza.

Scottland will now shift their attention to a home date against basement side Triangle at Rufaro tomorrow.

They will be hoping to stretch their clean sheet tally to 13 in 17 matches.

Centre-back Kevin Moyo believes Scottland’s defensive abilities are a result of “good understanding” between players.

“It’s all about teamwork and it’s something that we always discuss in training that we mustn’t concede easy goals.

“Teams must work hard to penetrate our team,” said Moyo.

Tomorrow, Scottland play Triangle who have the joint worst goal return in the league so far. The Sugar Boys have nine goals in 16 matches, the same tally as Manica Diamonds, who had scored seven before their 2-2 draw against Harare giants Dynamos at Sakubva on Sunday. So, Scottland versus Triangle is a match-up between the team with the best defence and a side with the worst goal return.
