FOR a club that is less than a year old, Scottland have made an impressive impact, particularly on social media.
With 101 000 Facebook followers, the Mabvuku-based side trails only Highlanders, who boast 147 000 supporters. The combined 248 000 followers of these two teams underscore the excitement surrounding their impending showdown.
This afternoon, Bosso and Scottland collide at Barbourfields Stadium in a high-stakes Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash.
The stakes are high — Highlanders, with their 99-year legacy, aim to assert their dominance over the league’s newest disruptors, while Scottland, backed by financial muscle, seek to overturn the traditional hierarchy.
Scottland have already made waves by poaching key players from Highlanders, including national team defender Peter Muduhwa and 2024 Castle Lager Golden Boot winner Lynoth Chikuhwa. This has only fuelled the rivalry, with Bosso determined to prove that money alone cannot dismantle their spirit.
Scottland owner Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya ignited the pre-match banter by boldly predicting a 4-0 rout of Highlanders. Bosso coach Kelvin Kaindu, however, remains unfazed.
“Football is played on the pitch,” Kaindu said in Thursday’s press conference. If they believe they can beat us 4-0, that’s their belief, but the game will be decided on the field.”
In the build-up to this clash, Highlanders have emphasised their storied history, running with the slogan: “99 years of football history and legacy”.
Next year, Bosso will mark their centenary, while Scottland are just getting started. Despite their infancy, Scottland have assembled a formidable squad featuring six Soccer Star of the Year finalists: Walter Musona, Tymon Machope, Godknows Murwira, Kingsley Mureremba, Khama Billiat, and Chikuhwa. They are guided by reigning Coach of the Year Tonderai Ndiraya.
Scottland may be favourites on paper, but Bosso’s renowned fighting spirit at Barbourfields remains a formidable weapon. The game has drawn massive interest, with a vibrant crowd expected. Confident Highlanders fans have even organised a post-match celebration at Highlanders Sports Club.
Highlanders enter the match on the back of a commanding 4-0 win over Kwekwe United, a response to their opening day 0-1 defeat to MWOS. They currently sit on four points following a 2-2 draw against GreenFuel. However, Bosso have faced challenges. Key departures, including Muduhwa and Chikuhwa, left them short-handed, while a FIFA-imposed transfer ban for failing to pay former coach Baltemar Brito further complicated matters. Fortunately, the embargo was lifted after a financial bailout from businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
Still, Highlanders possess quality in players like MacKinnon Mushore, Melikhaya Ncube and captain Andrew Mbeba.
Meanwhile, Scottland boast offensive depth beyond their usual trio of Billiat, Machope and Musona, with Namibian striker Sadyney Urikhob and speedster Michael Tapera also available. Scottland’s unbeaten start ended last week with a 0-1 loss to Ngezi Platinum Stars, following victories over Triangle and CAPS United. They now sit on six points from three matches.
DeMbare vs Simba Bhora: Champions Test
Bulawayo is not the only focal point today, as Harare giants Dynamos host champions Simba Bhora at Rufaro Stadium. The two sides met last month in the Castle Challenge Cup final, where Dynamos emerged victorious. Both teams remain unbeaten, but Simba Bhora hold an edge as the only team yet to concede a goal this season. However, their goal-scoring form is concerning, with just one goal in three matches.
“This match is like a six-pointer for us,” said Simba Bhora coach Joel Lupahla.
“If we win, we stay within touching distance of the pacesetters.”
Dynamos, too, have struggled in front of goal, drawing all three matches, and scoring just once — an own goal against TelOne. They hope Ghanaian import Frank Agmeyang can solve their attacking woes.
“Yes, we have goal-scoring issues, but we’ve been working hard at training,” said Dynamos vice-captain Shadreck Nyahwa, who is expected to partner Temptation Chiwunga in midfield.
Dynamos welcome back captain Emmanuel Jalai, who has been the talk of the nation after standout performances for the Warriors in recent World Cup qualifiers against Benin (2-2) and Nigeria (1-1).
Today all eyes will be on Bulawayo and Harare, where battles for supremacy and bragging rights take centre stage.
