Scrap local football season: Sunday News Twitter followers

Sports Reporter
SUNDAY News followers on Twitter are of the view that this year’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League should be written off in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a response to our 24-hour Twitter poll which ended yesterday, 60 percent of Sunday News followers on the microblogging and social networking service voted for the season to be scrapped while 40 percent of them disagreed. The 2020 domestic season is yet to get underway because of measures put in place by the Government to fight the spread of Covid-19.

Recently, the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) said they were in consultation with relevant stakeholders and affiliates on the safe return to football activities. Earlier in the year, Zifa had indicated that football could start in August/September but with the country still to contain the spread of the deadly pandemic that appears highly unlikely.

If the season is to start in September, the option is for a change in the country’s football calendar to be in line with other international leagues, something that is subject to much debate seeing that Zimbabwe’s facilities pose challenges as most of the stadiums do not have entirely covered stands for the spectators to shield them from rain. Most of the stadiums also have poor drainage, which makes it impossible to have any matches during the rainy season.
