SCRIPTWRITERS CRY FOUL

LOCAL movie script writer and director, Richard Tentone, has spoken out against the rampant piracy and illegal showcasing of movies in lodges around Mutare.

Tentone alleges that several lodges are screening movies without the necessary licences, which was depriving local creators of their rightful royalties.

“We need to respect the intellectual property rights of movies because the Zimbabwean copyright law prohibits the reproduction, distribution and public display of copyrighted works without permission.

“However, enforcement remains a challenge and many establishments continue to flout the law with impunity.”

The Film Association vice-chairperson, Amanda Ranganawa, said:

“Most of these illegal movie showcasing lodges make sure they offer lower prices than ours yet we have a standard price which helps us pay our cast.

“Mutare is a very small city and can easily be manipulated into believing that cheap pirating is the best way yet we are desperately trying to improve our standards in Zimbabwe so we want the National Arts Council to help us stop movie pirating.”
