VICTORIA Falls residents were on Saturday treated to a rare “Scruffy Dog” show which saw 18 dogs competing at Invuvu Bar.
The dog owners took their pets through various drills as they competed in different categories such as Best Dressed, Ugliest, Most Disciplined, Healthiest, Best Dog with tricks, Best Golden Oldies and Best Zimbabwean dog.
The show started with a display by three police dogs who paraded their skills of taking orders and detecting crime under the best tricks category, much to the excitement of the more than 100 spectators who were in attendance.
It was an interesting show as some of the dogs were clad in different kinds of dresses while some wore Zimbabwe colours in trying to win the coveted prizes.
One dog stole the show with its Father Christmas attire while some wore dresses and skirts as well as traditional attire.
Gail Webster, whose dog Zippy won the Best Dressed and Ugliest categories, said she was impressed by her dog’s performance at the competition. The dog’s face looked a bit deformed with a flat forehead and nose. Four dogs, two of them from the same mother, won prizes for being more than five-years-old.
Prizes included toy hampers for the dogs and dog food while their owners were rewarded with T-shirts and caps.
The organisers of the show – Olga Mutamba, who is general manager at Rest Camp and Mel Crawford, said the event was meant to raise funds for charity.
Victoria Falls veterinary surgeon, Dr Gordin Moyo, said the main purpose of the show was to raise awareness on the importance of keeping pets clean and healthy.
This was the second time that the competition was being held in the resort town.
