COSTA Gurupira, a renowned sculptor and founding member of the Tafara Mabvuku Arts Association (TAMA), is spearheading a transformative project aimed at empowering young people in Mutoko.
With a vision to provide sustainable skills that can help combat drug abuse, Gurupira is set to offer free sculpting lessons to the youths in the community.
Gurupira, who began his journey in 1971, told H-Metro:
“In this fight against drugs, we cannot always blame these children. Often, they turn to substances due to a lack of opportunities.
“Teaching them a craft will not only keep them occupied but will also allow them to earn a living.
“Initially, this project started here in Mabvuku but I decided to take this project to Mutoko where I come from as a way of giving back to the community.”
Gurupira has already acquired several tonnes of stone from Mvurwi, laying the groundwork for the sculpting workshops.
He is also appealing to the community, and potential donors, to support the initiative by contributing funds for food and essential tools.
“I want to ensure that all participants can focus on learning without the burden of costs and I also hope this project creates a positive change,” he said.
Gurupira plans to construct boarding facilities for the students.
“The project aims to instill discipline, creativity and entrepreneurial skills among the youth, fostering a sense of purpose in the community.
“This project is a much-needed intervention for our youths.
“It offers them a chance to build a future free from the grips of addiction.
“My dream is to see these young people not just survive, but thrive.”
