Lawyer-cum-sculptor David Ngwerume has worked on pieces that illustrate his expressions towards the middle class in the contemporary society. Ngwerume who unveiled the pieces to the public last week said, just like any other person, he has his way of thinking towards the middle class in the society and the pieces tells the whole story.“The middle class has its way of living and as artists we use our artwork as a way of expressing our feelings towards their culture,” he said.
He said artists should utilise current affairs to expose our cultural values through their works.
“There are several things that are being trending on daily bases. If we have a look on twitter trending issues end having hash tags and names. That is the same with those pieces they just express how I feel towards the middle class,” he said.
Ngwerume said he has since taken some of the pictures to the public to interpret his feeling towards the middle class.
“We are still working on more pieces that illustrate my expressions on middle class people. They will say it all because as artists sometimes we have to express how we feel towards the society through our works,” he said.
The sculptor who is known for making big art works said he was getting several views from people through various social media networks.
“I have posted about two of my works now and people have been saying different views but I will only say more when all the pieces are done,” he said.
A lawyer by profession, Ngwerume believes our cultural values will not easily fade away despite the new inventions that are coming.
“Though there are some artistic works we expose some cultural beliefs in the contemporary society.
I am putting final touches to some of the pieces that give the whole story about the middle class,” he said.
His art works are made of spring stone and opal acquired from Chiweshe and Guruve. Weekend days are enough for him to make his stone works.
He fell in love with stone art as a young boy and, despite making it academically, Ngwerume did not drop his art and vows to continue carving stones and encouraging young artists to pursue the art with passion.
