A second fire incident has been reported by the National Railways of Zimbabwe with three coaches having been burnt down at the Shunters complex in Harare.
The first fire incident broke out on Monday at the NRZ mechanical workshops in Bulawayo with the company saying 44 decommissioned passenger coaches were burnt down.
In a statement on Thursday, the NRZ said it has over the course of the week experienced a spat of fire outbreaks at its premises which appear to be coordinated arson attacks.
“The first fire broke out on Monday at the NRZ Mechanical workshops in Bulawayo destroying 44 decommissioned passenger coaches. The second incident took place at the shunters complex in Harare where three coaches have been torched.
“We strongly suspect that these incidences are a result of foul play. The NRZ and the Zimbabwe Republic Police have since opened investigations into the matter and no stone will be left unturned. We would want to warn the saboteurs that the long arm of the law will catch up with them,” reads the statement.
While it had been previously reported that 51 decommissioned coaches were torched down in Bulawayo on Monday, the company revealed that further investigations observed that other coaches had already been burnt on a separate incident.
