The second-tier football leagues across the country are gaining momentum, with their management expressing confidence of an exciting season after the kickoff.
Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) commenced last week, with Matchday 2 fixtures set to continue today, including Ngezi U-19 hosting MWOS U-19 at Gwanzura Stadium. NRSL vice chairman Sweeney Mushonga praised clubs and officials for their professionalism, but raised concerns over pitch conditions,
“The league is pleased to report a successful return, with 9 out of 10 matches completed without incident.
“Unfortunately, the Karoi United FC vs Ngezi Platinum Stars U-19 clash was abandoned at halftime due to heavy rains, with the match declared a 0-0 draw for safety reasons.
“While we appreciate the cooperation of teams and fans, the state of some pitches remains unsatisfactory. We urge clubs to improve facilities to prioritise player safety over mere fixture fulfilment.
“We commend the sportsmanship and fair play displayed in match day 1 and encourage all clubs to adhere to regulations. Any breaches will be penalised accordingly. Together, we can uphold the NRSL’s high standards.”
ZIFA Central Region Soccer League (CRSL) vice chairman Pithias Shoko anticipates a competitive and well-supported season.
The season kicked off last week with six teams registering wins, namely, Sheasham, Chapungu, Hardrock, Gwanda Pirates, Jame West and West Nicholson.
Matchday 2 fixtures are set to commence on Saturday with Hardrock hosting Tongogara at Bagdad as one of the major fixtures.
“It’s early for a full assessment, but the league promises to be tough based on team preparations and results,” said Shoko.
“We’re thrilled with fan turnout, the Zvishavane derby between Shabanie Mine and FC Platinum U-19 at Maglas Stadium was a testament to the passion for the beautiful game.”
Eastern Region Soccer League (ERSL) chairman Wisdom Simba echoed the optimism, highlighting the league’s competitive quality and fan engagement.
The league is set for matchday three this weekend.
